2027: Jonathan Remains PDP Member

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains an active member of the party, dismissing claims circulating online that he has joined another political party ahead of the 2027 general elections. The statement, released on Saturday by the faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, emphasized that Jonathan personally completed his digital membership registration in his ward as part of the party’s ongoing registration exercise. This move underscores his continued allegiance to the PDP under the Turaki-led faction, despite widespread social media posts depicting him as a presidential candidate or running mate with various politicians.

The faction described the campaign posters as misleading and urged Nigerians to disregard any suggestion that Jonathan has defected from the PDP. It highlighted that some of the materials circulating online falsely portray the former president as affiliated with other parties, potentially misleading voters and creating confusion in the political landscape. The PDP faction stressed that Jonathan’s membership is valid and legally recognized under the party’s current structure, and that he reaffirmed his commitment during a recent meeting with the party’s interim National Working Committee.

The clarification comes amid Nigeria’s strict electoral laws, which prohibit individuals from being registered with more than one political party simultaneously. The PDP faction warned that some individuals may attempt to secretly register prominent politicians like Jonathan in multiple parties without their knowledge or consent, a move that could undermine electoral integrity. To prevent such manipulation, the group called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public to ignore any unofficial registration records or campaign materials linking Jonathan to parties other than the PDP.

The Turaki-led faction reiterated its commitment to transparency and adherence to party and electoral regulations. It emphasized that Jonathan’s participation in the digital registration process was voluntary and conducted in full compliance with the party’s procedures. The statement also served as a reminder to political actors and the media to verify information before dissemination, especially during critical electoral periods. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, the PDP faction’s stance reinforces its position on party loyalty and legal compliance, setting a precedent for future political engagements.
