13 Feared Dead, Others Injured in Fresh Plateau Attack: Latest Violence Sparks Outrage

A fresh wave of violence has rocked Ngbra Zongo community in Kwall District, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, as unknown gunmen killed at least 13 people in a brutal attack on Friday morning. The incident, which occurred around midnight, left several residents injured and many others fleeing into nearby bushes for safety. Eyewitnesses and local leaders described the assault as chaotic and merciless, with attackers using firearms and machetes to target innocent civilians.

Residents of Ngbra Zongo reported that the assailants stormed the community without warning, opening fire indiscriminately before moving house to house to attack residents. Mr. Philip Alanga, a local resident, told journalists in Jos that the attackers showed no mercy, hacking people to death and leaving a trail of blood and destruction. “They came into the community around midnight and started shooting and hacking people to death. They moved from one house to another, attacking innocent people,” Alanga stated, his voice trembling with emotion.

The violence forced many families to abandon their homes and seek refuge in the surrounding forests. Several injured victims were left behind, requiring urgent medical attention, but access to healthcare remains difficult due to the ongoing insecurity. The attack has deepened fear among residents, who are now living in constant anxiety over future assaults.

Mr. Danjuma Auta, Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), confirmed the incident and condemned the violence in strong terms. He described the attack as “barbaric, tragic and condemnable,” urging authorities to take immediate action to protect vulnerable communities. Auta emphasized that such acts of terror must not be tolerated and called for swift justice for the victims.

Plateau State has witnessed a surge in violent attacks in recent weeks, with several incidents linked to bandits, some suspected to be Fulani militia. These attacks have targeted rural communities, often resulting in loss of life, destruction of property, and displacement of families. Security agencies have been under pressure to respond effectively, but many communities continue to live under the shadow of fear.

The latest attack in Ngbra Zongo highlights the fragile security situation in the region and underscores the urgent need for coordinated military and civilian efforts to restore peace. As investigations continue, residents are demanding better protection and accountability from both state and federal authorities. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and the need for lasting solutions to prevent further bloodshed.
