Zenith Bank Appoints Mustafa Bello as New Chairman of the Board

Zenith Bank Plc has appointed Mustafa Bello as its new Chairman of the Board of Directors, following regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria and ratification by shareholders at the bank’s Annual General Meeting held on May 5, 2026. The appointment takes immediate effect and marks a pivotal leadership change for one of Nigeria’s most prominent financial institutions. Bello’s appointment underscores Zenith Bank’s commitment to strong corporate governance, strategic oversight, and operational stability as it continues to expand its presence across Africa and international markets.

Bello has been a member of Zenith Bank’s Board since December 2017 and has served on several key committees, including the Board Audit and Compliance Committee, the Board Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee, and the Board Risk Management Committee, which he previously chaired. His extensive experience in corporate governance, regulation, and institutional leadership is expected to support the bank’s long-term growth and strategic objectives. Zenith Bank described him as a seasoned administrator with decades of experience in both the public and private sectors.

Before joining Zenith Bank, Bello served as Nigeria’s Minister of Commerce from 1999 to 2002 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In that role, he played a crucial part in shaping Nigeria’s trade policy framework to meet World Trade Organization standards. He also led the implementation of the Corporate Affairs Commission’s online registration project in 2002, a reform that significantly modernized business registration in Nigeria.

From 2003 to 2014, Bello served as Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, where he spearheaded initiatives to attract foreign direct investment and strengthen Nigeria’s international investment partnerships. A graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with a degree in Civil Engineering earned in 1978, Bello received the Shell Prize for the best engineering project and thesis in his faculty.

He currently chairs Invest-in-Northern Nigeria Limited and has previously served as an Independent Non-Executive Director on the boards of Eskom Holdings Limited of South Africa and FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc. Zenith Bank emphasized that Bello’s leadership experience in governance, strategic planning, and institutional management will be instrumental in guiding the bank’s future direction.
