The Anambra State Police Command has arrested five suspects for committing serious sexual and child abuse offences, including incest, rape, and defilement, with all cases set to be arraigned before the Special Court in Awka on 6th May 2026. The arrests follow investigations by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and its Gender Unit, which have been actively working to combat violence against children and vulnerable individuals. The suspects, including four men and one woman, are accused of perpetrating heinous acts against minors and family members, with some cases coming to light after medical examinations revealed the extent of the abuse.
Among the suspects is Rapuruchukwu Ezenandu, a 46-year-old man accused of incest with his 20-year-old daughter. The case was transferred from Oko Police Station on 23rd April 2026, after the victim tested HIV positive during a hospital visit. According to the police, the suspect allegedly engaged in sexual relations with the victim since she was 17 years old. He has since made a confessional statement, which will be used in court proceedings.
Another case involves Eucharia Ezenwanne, a woman accused of physically abusing two young children—Echetuna Ezenwanne, 6, and Chikaima Ezenwanne, 4—using a wire to inflict injuries. The suspect claimed she adopted the children from a motherless babies’ home in Onitsha. The abuse was reported to authorities, prompting immediate investigation by SCID operatives.
On 22nd April 2026, the Gender Unit received a case of rape involving a 16-year-old girl from Ogbunike Police Division. The suspect, Chukwuemeka Chidiebere, 26, a security personnel at an estate, allegedly attacked the girl as she walked to visit a friend. He dragged her into an uncompleted building and forcibly had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. The suspect has also confessed to the crime.
A separate case of defilement involved a 11-year-old girl lured into a barbing saloon by Uchenna Muojama, 36. The suspect allegedly forced her into sexual acts within the salon. Medical reports have been obtained to support the case. Additionally, on 21st April 2025, a 52-year-old man, Chukwudi Nwayata, was accused of defiling an 11-year-old girl by exploiting her mental condition and luring her to his house, where he committed the act.
All five suspects have been thoroughly investigated by SCID operatives and are scheduled to be arraigned before the Special Court in Awka. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the crimes as heinous and unacceptable, reaffirming the command’s commitment to protecting children and ensuring justice for victims. The arrests highlight ongoing efforts to address gender-based violence and child abuse in Anambra State, with authorities urging the public to report any suspicious activities to help safeguard vulnerable populations.
