Police Arrest Suspected Cultist Armed with Pistol and Military Gear in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested a suspected cultist in Bida, recovering a firearm and military-related items during a routine patrol operation. The suspect, identified as Agada Isaac, also known as “Tee-light,” 30, was apprehended near a lodge close to the Federal Polytechnic Bida area while riding a motorcycle. Police operatives from ‘B’ Division noticed unusual behaviour when the suspect suddenly abandoned his bike and attempted to flee upon sighting them. A swift chase led to his arrest, and a search of his person revealed a Beretta pistol.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Minna. He stated that further investigation at the suspect’s residence uncovered additional incriminating items, including a military camouflage cap, knicker, and jacket. During interrogation, Agada confessed to being a member of a cult group called the “Vikings.” He admitted purchasing the pistol from an individual named Gideon, also known as “Starboy,” who resides in Suleja, for the sum of ₦300,000.

The suspect, who works as a campus photographer, claimed the military attire was given to him by a friend and not acquired for any illicit purpose. However, police authorities remain skeptical and are treating the case with high priority due to the nature of the recovered items and the suspect’s alleged affiliation with a known cult group. The possession of firearms and military gear by civilians is a serious offense under Nigerian law, especially when linked to organized crime or violent groups.

Abiodun emphasized that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further interrogation. Police are intensifying efforts to locate Gideon and any other individuals who may be involved in the arms transaction or the cult’s activities. The arrest is part of ongoing security operations aimed at curbing cultism and gun violence in Niger State, particularly in educational institutions and urban areas.

This development underscores the growing concern over the proliferation of firearms and organized crime among youth in the region. Authorities have warned the public to report any suspicious activities, especially those involving unlicensed weapons or unusual gatherings. The Niger State Police Command continues to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure public safety and maintain law and order. The case is expected to serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar criminal acts.
