Nigerian Army troops have arrested a suspect accused of supplying explosives to terrorist groups and seized a large quantity of dangerous materials along the Gusau–Magami road in Zamfara State. The arrest took place on Tuesday, April 23, at approximately 12:30 pm, when soldiers from the 1 Mechanised Infantry Regiment intercepted the man in Gusau Local Government Area. The suspect was reportedly traveling from Gobirawa Chali, allegedly en route to deliver the explosives to armed groups operating in the region.
Security sources confirmed the development to Zagazola Makama, a respected security expert based in the Lake Chad region. The sources stated that the suspect was stopped during routine surveillance operations aimed at disrupting the flow of weapons and explosives into conflict zones. The military’s swift action highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen security in the North-West, where terrorist activities and criminal networks remain a persistent threat.
Among the items recovered from the suspect were 394 water gel explosives, five electric detonators (No. 33), one and a half rolls of detonating cord, and a mobile phone. These materials are commonly used in improvised explosive devices and pose a serious risk to public safety. The suspect and all seized items are currently in military custody for further interrogation and investigation.
This operation is part of a broader military strategy to dismantle supply chains used by terrorist groups to fuel violence in the region. Security forces have intensified surveillance and patrols along key routes to prevent the movement of explosives and other contraband. The Gusau–Magami corridor has been identified as a critical transit point for illicit materials, making it a focal point for military operations.
Troops continue to monitor the area closely to prevent any retaliation or further attempts to smuggle explosives. The arrest sends a strong message to criminal elements and terrorist networks that security forces are actively working to protect communities and maintain order. Authorities have also urged civilians to report suspicious activities to help enhance security efforts.
The Nigerian Army’s actions reflect its commitment to safeguarding lives and infrastructure in the North-West. As the region faces ongoing security challenges, such operations are vital in reducing the threat posed by armed groups. The successful interception of these explosives could prevent potential attacks and save countless lives. This incident underscores the importance of continued vigilance and coordinated military action in combating terrorism across Nigeria.
