A midnight armed robbery attack on student hostels at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ibogun Campus, in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, has prompted an immediate investigation by the Ogun State Police Command. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, left students in panic as a group of about 12 armed robbers stormed the hostels, firing sporadically and stealing phones, laptops, and other valuables. Some students were injured while trying to escape, and a student’s vehicle was also carjacked during the chaos.
The attack was reported through a social media post by Jinadu Michael Mabayomije on X, who detailed the violent intrusion. According to the post, the robbers moved across different hostels on campus, shooting as they went, creating fear and confusion among students. The post emphasized that the level of criminality on a university campus is unacceptable and called for urgent action from the Ogun State government, the Nigerian Police Force, and the Ogun State Police Command to ensure justice and restore safety.
The police have responded swiftly to the incident. DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer of Ibogun Police Division and the Area Commander have been deployed to the scene to assess the situation and begin investigations. Babaseyi urged the public to remain calm and assured them that the safety of the students is being prioritized.
The attack has raised serious concerns about campus security in Nigeria, especially in tertiary institutions located in high-risk areas. Students, parents, and university administrators are now demanding stronger security measures and increased police presence on campus to prevent future incidents. The incident also highlights the growing insecurity in Ogun State, where armed robbery and violent crimes have become increasingly common.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to trace the robbers’ movements and gather evidence from eyewitnesses and surveillance footage. The police have not yet disclosed the number of suspects apprehended or the exact location of the attack within the campus. However, the swift deployment of officers signals a commitment to addressing the situation.
This attack on OOU Ibogun Campus is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of students in Nigeria’s educational institutions. With the academic year ongoing, ensuring a safe learning environment remains a critical priority for both government and security agencies. The incident is likely to spark renewed calls for improved security infrastructure and collaboration between universities and law enforcement.
