Armed bandits have killed two people and abducted a police inspector in a violent attack along the Birnin Magaji–Kaura Namoda road in Zamfara State, according to security expert Zagazola Makama. The incident, which occurred on April 19 at around 1:00 p.m., involved a large group of armed bandits estimated to be about 100 strong, who blocked the road between Gidan Malam Haruna and Gidan Katare villages in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area. The attackers, armed with AK-47 rifles, targeted a Golf 3 vehicle transporting passengers from Nasarawa Godel market to Kaura Namoda.
Security sources cited by Makama confirmed that the bandits opened fire on the vehicle, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. One of the victims has been identified as Zaliha Usman, while the other is an unidentified infant. The attack also led to the abduction of Police Inspector Bala Abdullahi, who was attached to the Kaura Namoda Division. The bandits made off with his motorcycle during the assault.
In response to the attack, a combined team of police tactical operatives, military personnel, community protection guards, and local hunters was deployed to the scene. However, the security forces came under fire from the bandits during their intervention. Two military personnel sustained gunshot injuries in the ensuing clash. The injured were evacuated to the General Hospital in Birnin Magaji, where they received medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were also taken to the same hospital, where their deaths were confirmed. Zaliha Usman’s body has since been released to her family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. The attack has heightened concerns over insecurity in the region, particularly along key transportation routes that connect rural communities to urban centres.
This incident adds to a growing list of violent crimes in Zamfara State, where banditry remains a persistent threat to civilians and security personnel. The abduction of a police officer and the killing of innocent civilians underscore the severity of the security challenges facing the state. Authorities continue to investigate the attack and are working to locate the abducted inspector and recover the stolen motorcycle.
As security agencies intensify operations in the area, residents remain on high alert. The government is under pressure to provide more robust protection for communities along vulnerable roads. This attack highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts to restore peace and stability in northern Nigeria’s most affected regions.
