A tragic electrocution incident along the Kupafu–Essa village axis of the Katcha highway in Niger State has claimed the lives of five people, with three others left seriously injured. The incident occurred on Monday, 20th April 2026, around 9:00 am, when a trailer carrying cartons of milk and passengers from Lagos to Kano encountered a traffic obstruction on the highway. In an attempt to bypass the congestion, the driver diverted the vehicle onto a nearby bush path, a decision that led to a fatal collision with high-voltage power cables.
The trailer, which was overloaded with both goods and passengers, came into direct contact with the overhead electrical lines during the unauthorized detour. The sudden surge of electricity electrocuted five individuals instantly, while three others sustained severe injuries. Eyewitnesses reported hearing loud screams and seeing sparks before emergency responders arrived at the scene. The victims were reportedly from different parts of Nigeria, traveling in the trailer as part of a long-distance haulage operation.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident and provided details on the immediate response. The three injured victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Bida for emergency medical treatment. Their conditions were described as critical, and medical personnel are monitoring them closely. Meanwhile, the bodies of the five deceased were transported to the General Hospital in Badeggi, Katcha, for post-mortem examination and identification.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with a primary focus on the driver’s actions. The driver of the trailer is currently at large, and the police are actively pursuing leads to apprehend him. Officials have emphasized the dangers of reckless driving and unauthorized route changes, especially in areas with exposed electrical infrastructure. The incident has sparked concerns about road safety and the regulation of commercial vehicles carrying passengers.
The Niger State Police Command has urged drivers to avoid risky maneuvers and to report any traffic obstructions to authorities instead of taking dangerous shortcuts. They also called on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious or unsafe road conditions. The incident has drawn attention to the need for better infrastructure management and public awareness on electrical hazards along highways.
This tragic event underscores the importance of road safety compliance and the dangers posed by poorly maintained or exposed power lines in rural and semi-urban areas. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to release more details on the circumstances leading to the electrocution. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of poor decision-making on the road, especially in high-risk environments.
