Bandits have launched a reprisal attack on Yankuzo community in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, burning down the palace of District Head Babangida Hamza and looting properties hours after a military operation targeted their hideouts. The assault, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, marked a violent escalation in the ongoing insecurity gripping northern Nigeria. Armed men, reportedly led by a figure known as Mai Rasha, stormed the community, firing sporadically as they advanced toward the traditional ruler’s residence.
The attackers set fire to the palace, destroying it completely. Babangida Hamza, speaking to journalists, confirmed that he was not present during the attack and that his family had been evacuated ahead of the assailants’ arrival. He described the incident as part of a pattern of violence targeting him personally, stating that he has been marked for attack by armed groups operating in the region for some time. Hamza also revealed that he had been abducted six months ago on suspicion of collaborating with security forces, forcing him to relocate for safety.
Residents reported that the gunmen remained in Yankuzo for several hours, carrying out a widespread looting spree. They ransacked homes and shops, stealing food supplies, cash, and other valuables. The chaos disrupted daily life in the community, leaving many residents traumatized and displaced. The attack came just hours after security forces conducted an offensive against bandit hideouts in the area, suggesting a direct retaliation by the armed groups.
This incident underscores the persistent insecurity in Zamfara State, where banditry and armed conflict have displaced thousands and disrupted agriculture and trade. The region has become a hotspot for criminal activities, with traditional leaders often caught in the crossfire. The destruction of the district head’s palace is not only a symbolic blow to local governance but also a warning to other community leaders who may be seen as collaborators with the state.
Security agencies have yet to issue a detailed response, but residents are calling for immediate intervention to restore peace and protect vulnerable communities. The attack on Yankuzo follows a series of similar incidents across Zamfara and neighboring states, highlighting the urgent need for sustained military and developmental efforts to address the root causes of insecurity. As the government continues to grapple with the crisis, communities like Yankuzo remain on edge, awaiting lasting solutions to the violence that has become all too familiar.
