The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Osun State until Friday, July 31, 2026, to address challenges faced by voters during the initial distribution period. The decision follows complaints about overcrowding and long queues at registration area centres, which hindered access for many eligible voters. The extension aims to ensure broader participation in the upcoming governorship election by allowing more Nigerians to collect their cards before the polls.
The PVC collection exercise initially began on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, and was set to conclude on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. However, due to logistical difficulties and public feedback, INEC Osun State decided to extend the window by three additional days. According to a statement issued by Ariyo Rufus, Head of Department, Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Inclusivity, on behalf of Resident Electoral Commissioner Oluwatoyin Babalola, 322,822 PVCs were collected during the first phase. This represents 62 per cent of the total available cards in the state.
INEC acknowledged the challenges experienced by voters, including congestion and delays at collection points, and emphasized the importance of enabling all registered voters to exercise their civic rights. The commission stated that the extension was approved to “enable more eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards before the governorship election.” This move reflects INEC’s commitment to inclusivity and transparency in the electoral process.
In addition to the extension at registration area centres, INEC announced that PVC collection at Local Government Area offices will commence on August 1, 2026, and run until August 7, 2026. This revised schedule replaces the earlier planned start date to align with the extended period at registration areas. The shift ensures a smoother and more organized distribution process across the state.
INEC urged all registered voters who have not yet collected their PVCs to take advantage of the extended window. The commission emphasized that having a PVC is essential for voting and encouraged citizens to plan ahead and visit designated centres during the extended period. The message was clear: “Concerned Registered Voters are urged to take advantage of this window and collect their Permanent Voter Cards.”
This extension underscores INEC’s responsiveness to public concerns and its dedication to ensuring free and fair elections.
