The recent international friendly match between Nigeria and Iran on March 27 in Antalya, Turkey, was not only a showcase of the Super Eagles’ resilience but also highlighted the talents of debutants Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu. Alex Iwobi, a key member of the Nigerian team, expressed his positive impression of the debutants after Nigeria secured a 2-1 win over the World Cup-bound Asian nation. This victory marked an important milestone for the Super Eagles, as it was their first regulation-time win since their triumph over Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
TheYellow Black Stars started the match strongly, with Moses Simon and Akor Adams scoring the early goals to establish a 2-0 lead in the first half. However, Iran did not relent and reduced the deficit through Mehdi Taremi, demonstrating their strength and perseverance. The second half saw the debuts of Fernandez and Nwaiwu, who fell into critical roles after replacing Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, respectively. Fernandez had a mid-game substitution, coming in for Ajayi, while Nwaiwu was called up late to replace Bassey, who withdrew from the match.
In an interview on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast, Iwobi praised the performance of the debutants, acknowledging their contributions to the team’s success in the second half. “Shout out to the two centre-backs, Fernandez and Nwaiwu, who made their debuts in the second half. They did well and performed solidly. It was a good performance,” he said. Iwobi also praised Iran, acknowledging their strength and the challenge they posed to the Super Eagles.
Despite the positive outcome, the match against Iran was not without challenges. Iwobi addressed his red card incident in the Super Eagles’ 2-2 draw against Jordan on March 31, admitting to his mistakes. “I need to address what I did and apologise to all my Nigeria teammates, staff, and everyone who cares about Nigeria. My actions were not good enough, and I got sent off. But I have to learn and move on. We got a draw, we didn’t lose the game, so we have to take the positives. I want to apologise for the mistake,” he stated.
Iwobi’s performance against Iran and Jordan moved him closer to a significant milestone, as he played the full match against Iran and then 31 minutes against Jordan, taking his total caps for the Nigeria national team to 99. His commitment and dedication to the team reflect his importance to the Super Eagles, especially as they navigate the challenges of international football. Looking ahead, this impressive performance and Iwobi’s accumulation of caps highlight the team’s continued potential to achieve further success on the global stage.
