62-Year-Old Arrested in Nasarawa Over Fake Currency Circulation

Nigeria Police Force operatives in Nasarawa State have arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, for allegedly circulating counterfeit N1,000 notes in the state. The suspect, a resident of Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was apprehended by officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia after receiving credible intelligence. He was caught in the act at a cattle market in Lafia, where he was reportedly engaged in trading using fake currency notes.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Hassan admitted to receiving the counterfeit money from an accomplice based in Mararaba Akunza, Lafia. This accomplice remains at large as police continue to track down other members of the suspected syndicate. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed.

The statement emphasized that Hassan was apprehended while actively using fake N1,000 notes in commercial transactions. Authorities are now intensifying efforts to dismantle the entire network involved in the production and distribution of the counterfeit currency. The police have also issued a public alert, urging citizens to be cautious during financial exchanges.

Traders, fuel station attendants, POS operators, and transport workers were specifically advised to remain vigilant. The police highlighted key indicators of fake notes, including poor print quality, smaller size than genuine currency, duplicated serial numbers, and the absence of visible security features. These signs, they stressed, should raise immediate suspicion during transactions.

Residents were encouraged to report any suspicious activity involving counterfeit money to the nearest police station without delay. The police assured the public that the suspect will be formally charged to court once investigations are complete. This arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the rising menace of fake currency circulation across Nigeria.

The case underscores the importance of public awareness and cooperation in combating financial crimes. As authorities continue their investigation, the police remain committed to ensuring the integrity of Nigeria’s currency system. The arrest of Hassan serves as a warning to others involved in similar illegal activities.
