Nigerian businessman and social media influencer Uche Rochas has sparked widespread debate by claiming that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), will not appear on the 2027 ballot. His statement comes amid growing legal uncertainty surrounding the registration status of the NDC, following a controversial Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja. Rochas made the assertion in a post on his X handle on Saturday, suggesting that Obi’s political ambitions for 2027 are in jeopardy due to ongoing legal challenges against the party’s legitimacy.
The controversy began when Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court overturned his earlier judgment that had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party. In the new ruling, Justice Dashen argued that the initial decision had negatively impacted the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which claims ownership of the logo currently used by the NDC. The PMP was not formally included as a party in the original lawsuit, raising concerns about procedural fairness and legal transparency.
This reversal has intensified political tensions across Nigeria, with opposition parties accusing the Bola Tinubu-led administration of orchestrating a strategy to ensure it faces minimal competition in the 2027 general elections. Critics argue that the timing and nature of the court’s decision suggest interference in the electoral process, potentially undermining democratic principles. Many supporters of Peter Obi have expressed alarm, fearing that the NDC’s de-registration could effectively remove Obi from the presidential race.
In his social media post, Rochas did not mince words. He stated, “Peter Obi will not be on any ballot in the 2027 general election. We will certainly miss him, and the noise.” He added, “I also feel sorry for those he deceived into spending their time and money on the NDC. Now, there will be no refunds.” These comments have drawn mixed reactions, with some viewing them as a cynical jab at Obi’s supporters, while others see them as a reflection of deepening disillusionment with the political landscape.
The NDC’s legal battle is now at a critical juncture, and its outcome could significantly influence Nigeria’s political dynamics in the coming years. With the 2027 elections approaching, the fate of the NDC and its presidential candidate remains uncertain, leaving many Nigerians anxious about the future of democratic competition in the country. The case continues to attract national attention, as stakeholders await further judicial developments that could determine whether Obi will be allowed to contest.
