A woman suffered serious injuries after being hit by a hit-and-run driver on the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos, prompting a swift rescue operation by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and emergency medical services. The incident occurred on Monday at the EFF Bus Stop inward Marwa, where the unidentified motorist fled the scene immediately after striking the victim, leaving her with a fractured arm and leg. LASTMA officials, who were monitoring traffic in the area, responded quickly to secure the injured woman and prevent further danger.
Traffic officers moved the victim away from the busy road to protect her from oncoming vehicles and immediately contacted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for emergency medical assistance. They also implemented traffic control measures to maintain the flow of vehicles and prevent secondary accidents at the scene. LASAMBUS personnel arrived promptly and transported the woman to the General Hospital, Odan, where she received urgent medical treatment and assessment.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep concern over the rising number of hit-and-run cases on Lagos roads. He condemned the act as both morally reprehensible and legally punishable, emphasizing that every driver has a civic duty to respect human life. “Fleeing the scene of an accident after causing injury to another road user is not only an abdication of responsibility but also a grievous affront to humanity and the rule of law,” Bakare-Oki stated.
He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through efficient traffic management and rapid emergency response. The agency also praised the seamless coordination between LASTMA and LASAMBUS, highlighting how their joint efforts were instrumental in rescuing the victim and restoring normal traffic conditions. LASTMA urged all motorists to drive with caution, obey traffic regulations, and report any road accidents or emergencies to the relevant authorities without delay.
The incident underscores the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of accountability on Nigeria’s roads. As traffic authorities continue to strengthen their response mechanisms, public awareness and responsible driving remain critical in reducing road accidents and saving lives. This case serves as a stark reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility, and every driver’s actions can have life-altering consequences.
