Two miners were killed in a violent attack by suspected Fulani militias at a mining site in Kuru Jenta, Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Friday night. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm as the victims and other workers were engaged in mining activities. The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the tragedy in a statement released to journalists on Saturday. He described the shooting as unprovoked and deeply unfortunate.
Tengwong noted that this latest attack follows another deadly incident just days earlier, when two miners were also killed at a mining site in Rakum village, Jos South Local Government Area. This pattern of violence highlights growing insecurity in mining communities across Plateau State. The BYM leader called on security agencies to launch an immediate investigation into the killings, identify those responsible, and ensure they face justice without delay.
He urged all residents, especially miners, to avoid working at night and to strictly adhere to safety protocols. Tengwong emphasized that mining operations during curfew hours increase vulnerability to attacks, particularly in areas already under heightened security restrictions. The state government had imposed a curfew on three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi, where the recent shooting took place.
The spokesman lamented that despite these measures, some individuals continue to engage in risky activities, putting themselves and others in danger. He stressed the need for public cooperation with security directives, urging people to remain vigilant and avoid actions that could attract criminal elements. Residents are advised to take extra precautions and report any suspicious movements to authorities promptly.
This tragic event underscores the persistent threat of armed violence in Plateau State’s mining zones, where economic activity often intersects with security challenges. The killings have raised concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures and the protection of civilians in conflict-prone areas. As investigations continue, communities are being reminded to prioritize safety over economic gain.
The situation remains tense, and more coordinated efforts from both security forces and local leaders will be crucial to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of miners and other residents. The loss of life in these incidents serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those working in high-risk areas, and calls for urgent action to prevent further bloodshed.
