Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have arrested two soldiers over their alleged involvement in a violent clash that injured three vigilante members and a woman in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at Kugiya in the Bukuru area, following a confrontation linked to the confiscation of a motorcycle and the presence of suspected armed men. Security sources confirmed that troops from Sector 6 under Operation Safe Haven responded to a distress call and found the victims injured at the scene. The woman, identified as Mrs. Kaneng Nyang Bot, was among those hurt during the altercation.
The arrest of the two soldiers was reported in a post shared on X by security analyst Zagozala Makama on Thursday night. The post detailed the timeline and circumstances surrounding the violent incident, which erupted around 4:00 p.m. after tensions rose during an attempted seizure of a motorcycle. According to preliminary investigations, the misunderstanding escalated quickly, leading to physical violence involving the soldiers and local vigilante members. The troops who responded to the scene confirmed that the injuries were sustained during the confrontation and that immediate medical attention was provided to the victims.
The two soldiers apprehended are identified as Private Adam Saheed of the 123 Special Forces Battalion, who was reportedly on leave at the time, and Gunner Mohammed Shuaibu of the 351 Artillery Regiment, attached to the 376 Artillery Regiment in Damaturu. Shuaibu’s leave had expired as of April 24, raising concerns about unauthorized absence and potential breaches of military protocol. Both individuals are now in custody and are expected to face disciplinary and administrative actions as part of the ongoing investigation.
Military authorities have not yet released a formal statement, but sources indicate that the incident is being treated with urgency due to its potential impact on community relations and security operations in the area. The involvement of military personnel in civilian disputes has drawn attention, especially given the sensitive nature of security operations in Plateau State, which has experienced periodic violence and ethnic tensions. The arrest underscores the military’s commitment to maintaining discipline and accountability within its ranks.
As investigations continue, security agencies are working to ensure that the affected civilians receive proper medical care and that the incident does not spark further unrest. The case also highlights the importance of clear communication and adherence to procedures during interactions between security forces and local communities. The outcome of the disciplinary process will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for handling similar cases in the future.
