Troops Arrest Suspected Terror Logistics Couriers in Kogi State

Nigerian troops under Operation MESA have arrested two suspected terrorist logistics couriers along the Obajana–Kabba road in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, marking a significant security development in the region. The arrests, made on Monday, were carried out following credible intelligence reports on the movement of suspected terrorist operatives. The operation was conducted by troops from the 12 Brigade, who set up a surprise checkpoint at RA Oshokoshoko, successfully intercepting a vehicle believed to be transporting arms and logistics for terrorist activities.

Zagazola Makama, a renowned counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, confirmed the development in a post on X, citing reliable sources. He noted that the vehicle was en route from Makurdi to Obajana when it was stopped during the checkpoint operation. The swift response by military personnel highlights the ongoing efforts to disrupt terrorist supply chains and prevent potential attacks in the North Central region of Nigeria.

A thorough search of the intercepted vehicle revealed a sack hidden behind the driver’s seat, containing 314 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and three AK-47 magazines. These weapons are commonly used by terrorist groups operating in the region and pose a serious threat to national security. In addition to the arms, authorities recovered two mobile phones, a driver’s licence, a National Identification Number (NIN) slip, and an identity card, which may assist in identifying the suspects and tracing their network.

The two suspects, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, are currently in military custody. They are being interrogated to determine their roles in the suspected terrorist logistics network and to uncover any additional links to other criminal or extremist elements. The recovered items will also undergo forensic analysis to establish connections to known terrorist groups and to gather evidence for potential prosecution.

This operation underscores the Nigerian military’s commitment to maintaining security in vulnerable areas, especially along critical transportation routes like the Obajana–Kabba road. The successful interception of weapons and logistics demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and coordinated military responses. As the investigation continues, security agencies remain vigilant against any attempts to destabilize the region through armed insurgency or smuggling.

The arrests are expected to send a strong message to terrorist elements operating in the North Central and surrounding areas. With continued surveillance and proactive measures, security forces aim to dismantle logistical networks that sustain violent extremist activities. This development reinforces Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to restore peace and ensure the safety of civilians in conflict-prone zones.
