Troops Arrest 21 Suspected Drug Traffickers in Abia Community Market

Troops of the 144 Battalion (Rear) under Operation Eastern Sanity conducted a well-coordinated raid on Tuesday at a mammy market in Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, targeting suspected crude oil bunkers, illegal petroleum product dealers, pipeline vandals, and illicit drug traffickers. The operation, which was intelligence-driven, resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals allegedly involved in drug trafficking. The military action was carried out in collaboration with personnel from the Nigerian Navy Component and the Nigerian Air Force 511 Quick Response Group, showcasing a multi-agency approach to tackling insecurity in the region.

Upon arrival at the target location, the troops swiftly cordoned off the entire market and conducted thorough searches of surrounding areas believed to be hideouts for criminal elements. The operation uncovered large quantities of Indian hemp, rizzlers, and suspected hard drugs commonly referred to as “ice,” along with a sum of N103,000 in cash. These items were seized during the search, indicating a well-organized illicit network operating within the market and adjacent bush areas.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Mazinho Attah, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 14 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Abia State. According to Attah, the suspects are currently in military custody and undergoing preliminary profiling. They will soon be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution in line with the law. The statement emphasized that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and restore peace in the region.

The military has also intensified patrols and domination activities across the area to prevent criminals from regrouping or resuming their illegal operations. This proactive approach aims to deny criminal elements the freedom to move or operate within the community. The raid underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to securing critical infrastructure and protecting citizens from the menace of drug trafficking and other forms of organized crime.

As security agencies continue to clamp down on illegal activities in Abia State, communities are being urged to cooperate with security operatives and report suspicious activities. The success of this operation highlights the importance of intelligence and inter-agency collaboration in combating crime. With continued vigilance and coordinated efforts, authorities aim to create a safer environment for residents and deter future criminal activities.
