A tragic multiple road crash on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway has claimed the lives of three passengers and left ten others severely injured, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC. The accident occurred at approximately 5:10pm on Friday on the Long Bridge, opposite Mikano, involving a white Mazda bus (AGL891XX), a white Toyota bus (KJA247YM), and a white Toyota Corolla car (BDG867HG). The incident involved 16 people in total, including 12 males and 4 females, with three female victims confirmed dead and ten others—nine males and one female—sustaining injuries.
The FRSC Public Relations Officer for Ogun State Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi, confirmed the details in a statement. He noted that the crash was reported to the FRSC at 1734hrs, and rescue teams arrived just six minutes later at 1740hrs, demonstrating a swift emergency response. FRSC operatives immediately began rescue operations and traffic management at the scene to prevent further accidents and ensure safety for other road users.
Preliminary investigations point to speed violation and loss of vehicle control as the likely causes of the crash. However, the FRSC stated that a full investigation is still ongoing to determine all contributing factors. The vehicles involved have been taken into custody by the MTD Police, Warewa, for further forensic examination and legal processes.
Injured victims were evacuated to two medical facilities: AZ Hospital in Magboro and the Accident and Emergency Centre in Ojota. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Ifo Morgue and Idera Morgue in Sagamu by the Ogun State Ambulance Service and FRSC personnel. These actions reflect coordinated efforts to manage the aftermath of the tragedy efficiently.
Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, Sector Commander for Ogun State, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and extended well wishes for the recovery of the injured. He also urged all motorists using the Lagos–Ibadan expressway to drive cautiously, avoid excessive speeds, maintain control of their vehicles, and stay alert throughout their journeys. The FRSC emphasized the importance of adhering to safe driving practices and avoiding any behaviour that could endanger lives on the road.
This incident highlights the dangers of reckless driving on Nigeria’s major highways and underscores the need for continuous public awareness and strict enforcement of traffic laws. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to release more findings, which may lead to improved safety measures along the corridor.
