Police in Ogun State have successfully foiled a truck hijacking incident in Ijebu Imushin, recovering a stolen DAF truck and a wooden-fabricated rifle used by the suspects. The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Oke-Ado area of Ijebu North, where a driver transporting motor spare parts was intercepted by suspected hoodlums. The criminals forcefully took control of the truck, but police intervention quickly turned the situation around. Officers from the Ijebu Imushin Division, in coordination with highway patrol units, mobilized swiftly to the scene, forcing the suspects to abandon the vehicle and flee.
According to DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, the operation was carried out after receiving immediate intelligence about the incident. The quick response by law enforcement prevented the suspects from making off with the truck and its valuable cargo. A thorough search of the recovered vehicle revealed a wooden-fabricated rifle wrapped in black tape, which was used during the hijacking. This weapon, along with the recovered truck, is now in police custody for further investigation.
The driver, who sustained minor injuries to his right ankle during the confrontation, was promptly given first aid treatment at the scene. Babaseyi confirmed that the police are actively tracking the suspects and are committed to apprehending them for prosecution. He emphasized that the timely intervention not only saved property but also reinforced public safety on the roads. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of road banditry and vehicle theft in parts of southwestern Nigeria.
Babaseyi urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via emergency numbers. He assured citizens of the command’s dedication to protecting road users and maintaining peace in the state. The recovery of the DAF truck and the weapon underscores the effectiveness of coordinated police operations in combating criminal activities. As security agencies continue to strengthen patrols, especially along major highways, communities are encouraged to support these efforts through community watch programs and prompt reporting.
This successful operation serves as a reminder of the importance of swift police response and public cooperation in tackling crime. The Ogun State Police Command remains focused on ensuring safe and secure transportation corridors for all residents.
