Police Foil Suspected Bandit Attack in Sokoto, Kill One Attacker

Police in Sokoto State have successfully foiled a suspected bandit attack on Daraye village in Wamako Local Government Area, killing one attacker and recovering an AK-47 rifle with 28 rounds of live ammunition. The operation, carried out in the early hours of Saturday, July 4, followed a distress call reporting a large group of armed bandits entering the community. Security forces responded swiftly, engaging the suspects in a fierce gun battle that ended in the bandits’ retreat into the forest. The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in northern Nigeria and underscores the police’s commitment to protecting vulnerable communities.

The distress call was received at approximately 1:35 am on July 4, prompting immediate deployment of officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU), and other tactical teams. These units joined forces with personnel stationed at the Wamako Divisional Headquarters to respond to the threat. Upon arrival, the security operatives engaged the assailants in a prolonged and intense firefight, demonstrating tactical skill and coordination. The attackers, overwhelmed by the response, were forced to flee into the dense forest, suffering multiple bullet wounds during the confrontation.

Following the initial engagement, police conducted a thorough search of the surrounding bushes. This led to the discovery and killing of one suspected bandit. Officers recovered a single AK-47 rifle and a magazine loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62 mm live ammunition from the body of the deceased suspect. The weapons and ammunition were seized as evidence and handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation. The recovery of such high-powered firearms underscores the level of armament available to criminal elements operating in the region.

In response to the attack, the Sokoto State Police Command has intensified confidence-building patrols in the area to reassure residents and deter future assaults. Nearby police divisions have also been placed on high alert to intercept any fleeing suspects who may attempt to seek medical treatment or regroup. The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, commended the officers for their bravery and professionalism during the operation. He emphasized that the police remain committed to working closely with other security agencies to maintain pressure on criminal networks and restore lasting peace across the state.

This incident reflects the persistent threat posed by armed banditry in northern Nigeria, particularly in rural communities. The successful interception of the attack serves as a reminder of the importance of swift, coordinated security responses. As security agencies continue to strengthen their presence, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. The police’s efforts in Sokoto State signal a determined push to reclaim safety and stability for affected communities.
