Ogun State Police have arrested two suspected “one-chance” robbers in Obantoko, recovering a stolen iPhone 12 Pro from a female victim after a violent incident involving a hijacked taxi. The suspects, identified as Odunuga Kehinde and Olajide Rasak, were apprehended following a distress call on Thursday, prompting a swift police response that prevented potential mob violence. The incident occurred at the OLG Somorin axis, where the victims were being forcibly removed from a Nissan Micra taxi painted in Ogun State colours.
The victims, a woman and her two sisters, had boarded the taxi from Somorin after attending a wedding anniversary. They were en route to NNPC Kuto, intending to transfer to another vehicle for their journey to Lagos. However, the driver and his accomplice allegedly deviated from the agreed route, became aggressive, and violently ejected the passengers. Upon alighting, one of the women realized her iPhone 12 Pro had been stolen and immediately raised the alarm.
DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the police spokesperson for Ogun State, confirmed the arrest and praised the rapid mobilization of Obantoko Division officers. He emphasized that the timely intervention averted possible mob action by angry residents who had gathered at the scene. Babaseyi stated that the stolen phone was recovered from the suspects, while the vehicle used in the crime managed to flee the area.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the robbery, and the recovered phone was released to its rightful owner. Police are currently conducting further investigations to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected criminal syndicate. Babaseyi urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities through the command’s emergency lines or the Gateway Shield platform.
The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by Ogun State Police to combat rising cases of “one-chance” robberies, which often target unsuspecting commuters in transit. Authorities continue to stress the importance of public cooperation in ensuring swift justice and enhancing community safety. As investigations proceed, residents are reminded to exercise caution when using public or hired transport, especially during night hours or in unfamiliar areas.
