Police Arrest Suspected Cultists in Delta Community, Recover Guns

Delta State Police Command has arrested eight suspected cultists in Amukpe, Sapele Local Government Area, following a successful operation on July 17, 2026. The suspects, identified as Lucky Naset (30), Ochuko Midwest (27), Samuel Oghene (29), Michael Mmadu (35), Dennis Philip (28), Goodluck Onujenya (30), Ovie Royal (25), and Divine Otemu (22), were apprehended after police conducted a raid on their hideout. During the operation, operatives recovered three locally fabricated pistols, six live cartridges, eight rounds of live ammunition of different calibres, two axes, two suspected cannabis grinders, and one bottle containing a suspected illicit substance. The seizure also included other incriminating exhibits linked to criminal activities.

According to SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, the suspects are believed to be involved in cult-related activities within the Sapele area. A thorough search of the hideout revealed the weapons and paraphernalia, which were immediately secured by the police. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the group’s operations and to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate. Authorities are also working to recover any additional weapons that may be in circulation.

The arrest comes amid heightened security measures in the region, as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to combat violent crimes and cultism. The Delta State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring peace and security across the state, especially in areas prone to criminal activities. The recovered weapons and substances are currently being examined in forensic laboratories to establish their origin and usage.

Cultism remains a serious challenge in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in the southern region, where it often leads to violent confrontations, assassinations, and general insecurity. The arrest of these eight individuals is seen as a significant step in curbing the spread of cult-related violence in Sapele and surrounding communities. Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are being interrogated to uncover more details about their network and operations. The police have also warned other members of the syndicate that they are not beyond the reach of justice. This operation underscores the ongoing collaboration between security agencies and local communities in the fight against crime.

As the investigation continues, the Delta State Police Command remains focused on dismantling criminal syndicates and restoring public confidence in the safety of the region. The arrest of these suspected cultists sends a clear message that no one is above the law, and those involved in criminal activities will be brought to justice.
