Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Idrisu Mohammed, in connection with the brutal killing of a couple, Muhammed Haruna and his wife Habiba Muhammed, in Asarara Village, Jega Local Government Area, on May 9, 2026. The suspect was apprehended following a swift police manhunt after the couple was attacked in their home during the early hours of the morning. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting heightened security measures and renewed calls for justice.
According to Bashir Usman, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kebbi State, the victims were asleep when the attack occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. The suspect allegedly used a cutlass to inflict fatal injuries on both Muhammed Haruna and Habiba Muhammed. Usman confirmed that both victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene, and the crime took place in Asarara Village, located within the Kimba District of Jega Local Government Area.
The police investigation revealed that Idrisu Mohammed had a history of threatening the couple with a cutlass on multiple occasions prior to the fatal attack. This pattern of intimidation, according to Usman, provided critical context for the crime and helped investigators identify the suspect quickly. The recovery of substantial and implicating evidence has further strengthened the case against him.
Usman emphasized that the suspect’s arrest was a result of coordinated efforts by the police force, including surveillance and community intelligence. He noted that the case has now been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution. The police are also working to ensure the safety of other residents in the area, particularly those who may have been threatened or intimidated.
The killing has drawn attention to rising insecurity in rural parts of Kebbi State, where incidents of violence often go underreported. Community leaders have called for increased police patrols and better access to justice for victims of crime. The arrest of Idrisu Mohammed is seen as a step forward in restoring public confidence in law enforcement.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging residents to report any suspicious activities and cooperate with security agencies. The case highlights the importance of early intervention in cases of domestic threats and the need for stronger preventive measures in vulnerable communities. The outcome of this case may set a precedent for how similar crimes are handled in the state moving forward.
