Police Arrest Newly Initiated Cultist and Two Others in Akwa Ibom

Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on criminal activities in the state following the arrest of three members of the Vikings confraternity and a 32-year-old security guard suspected of stealing electrical cables from churches and public facilities. The operations, carried out in Uyo, resulted in the recovery of drugs, stolen equipment, and tools used in criminal acts. The police confirmed that the suspects are students of a polytechnic in the state, with one of them, Ubong Matthew, being a fresh initiate into the cult group.

According to DSP Timfon John, the Public Relations Officer of the command, investigations revealed that Ubong Matthew was allegedly forcefully initiated into the Vikings on July 5, 2026, during a ceremony reportedly orchestrated by Dick Udofia at a hideout on Abak Road, Uyo. The raid uncovered substances suspected to be methamphetamine (Ice), cannabis commonly known as Indian hemp, and other items linked to drug use. These findings highlight the growing link between cultism and drug abuse among students in the state.

In a separate but related operation, police arrested Joshua Akpan, a 32-year-old security guard employed by a private security firm. He is accused of vandalizing and stealing armored electrical cables and other installations from churches, residential buildings, factories, and government facilities. During a search of his residence, officers recovered cut-to-size armored cables, bundles of damaged wires, pliers, an iron-cutting blade, a hammer, and other tools believed to have been used in the crimes.

DSP John stated that Akpan confessed to stealing cables from the Catholic Cathedral, where he had been working as a security guard. This act of betrayal has raised concerns about security vulnerabilities in sensitive institutions. All suspects, including the three cult members and the security guard, will be charged to court once investigations are completed.

Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, commended the operatives for their professionalism and swift response. He reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to eliminating crime and restoring peace in Akwa Ibom State. The police have emphasized that such operations are part of a broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks and protect citizens.

This latest intervention underscores the increasing efforts by law enforcement to address cultism, drug abuse, and economic sabotage in the state. As the police continue to target criminal hotspots, communities are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. The crackdown sends a strong message that no one is above the law, and justice will be served.
