Police Arrest Man Allegedly for Defiling Minor in Abia Community

Abia State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man, Stephen Njoku, for allegedly defiling an 8-year-old child in Ebem Ohafia, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State. The suspect was apprehended by community youths and handed over to the police before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia for further investigation. The victim was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention following the incident. Authorities confirmed that the case is under active investigation, and the suspect will be charged to court once the probe is concluded.

The alleged abuse triggered a strong reaction from the community, with about 200 women staging a protest in Ebem. The women marched through the streets, demanding justice for the young victim, and performed a traditional ritual known as Ikpa Mbogo, which involves carrying fresh leaves as a symbolic act of condemnation against the accused. This cultural practice reflects the community’s deep-rooted values and its collective outrage over the crime.

The Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU) has issued a strong statement condemning the incident, calling it disturbing, unacceptable, and a violation of the community’s moral and cultural standards. In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Okali, the union emphasized that Ebem Ohafia has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, exploitation, or violation of vulnerable individuals. The EODU urged community members, especially the affected women, to remain calm and allow law enforcement to handle the matter properly.

DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident to DAILY POST on Friday. She stated that police officers visited the scene and successfully apprehended the suspect. Chinaka assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and that the suspect will face legal consequences once the process is complete. The police have also reiterated their commitment to protecting children and ensuring justice is served in all cases of sexual abuse.

The case has drawn widespread attention in Abia State, highlighting the need for stronger community vigilance and legal enforcement to protect children from sexual predators. As investigations continue, the community remains hopeful that the justice system will deliver a fair and swift outcome. This incident underscores the importance of public awareness, swift action, and collaboration between law enforcement and local leaders in safeguarding children’s rights.
