The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested 33 suspects in a major crackdown on criminal activities, including armed robbery and drug-related offences, across several high-risk areas in Yola South and Girei local government areas. The operation, carried out on Saturday, June 27, targeted locations known for harbouring young criminal gangs referred to as the Shila Boys. Police say the arrests were part of a coordinated effort to restore peace and security in the state, especially in areas plagued by youth violence and illegal activities.
According to SP Suleiman Nguroje, the Police Public Relations Officer, the joint operation involved Divisional Police Officers who conducted raids at multiple flashpoints. These locations included Bamgel Mafias Quarters, Yolde Pate Junction/New Road, behind LCCN Church, Shagari Phase II, Sabon Fegi, Unguwan Burauba, Mbamoi, Hayin Gada, Anguwan Tsamiya, Anguwan Fulani, Sokoto Street, and Yola Market. The areas have long been associated with criminal networks and have seen frequent incidents of theft, violence, and drug use.
The 33 suspects, all young men, are currently being screened and profiled by police investigators. Nguroje confirmed that those found guilty of any offence will be charged to court in accordance with the law. He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the suspects were involved in other criminal activities beyond the initial charges. This includes probing possible links to larger criminal syndicates operating in the region.
During the raids, police recovered several incriminating items, including one cutlass, one knife, 10 razor blades, and substances believed to be banned drugs. Additionally, dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were also seized. These exhibits are being tested and documented as evidence for potential prosecution. The recovery of weapons and narcotics underscores the seriousness of the criminal activities being investigated.
The police have urged residents to report any suspicious activities and to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure lasting peace. Nguroje stressed that the command remains committed to cracking down on crime and protecting the public. He also called on parents and community leaders to play a role in guiding youth away from criminal lifestyles.
This operation marks a significant step in Adamawa State’s efforts to combat rising insecurity and youth radicalization. As the police continue their investigations, authorities are expected to release further updates on the suspects and any additional arrests. The crackdown is seen as a proactive measure to prevent future violence and to deter potential offenders.
