The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 10 suspects linked to the violent disruption of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Egbe, Alimosho Local Government Area, on Saturday. The incident occurred at Onilewura Street along Liasu Road, where suspected hoodlums stormed the election venue, firing shots sporadically and causing widespread panic among party members, voters, and nearby residents. The chaos forced many to flee the area for safety, disrupting the electoral process and raising concerns over security during political activities in the region.
During the attack, several individuals sustained injuries, and the suspects allegedly took advantage of the confusion to steal mobile phones and other valuables from attendees and nearby residents. Despite initial fears of fatalities, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Femi Adeoye, confirmed that no lives were lost. He emphasized that the police are committed to ensuring accurate information is disseminated and dismissed unverified reports of deaths.
The 10 suspects have been taken into custody and are currently being held at the Ikotun Divisional Police Station. Security operatives also recovered a locally fabricated firearm from the group, which is now part of the evidence being examined. ASP Adeoye stated, “The hoodlums responsible for the disturbance have been arrested and taken to Ikotun Divisional Police Station. A gun was also recovered from them.” This development underscores the police’s swift response to maintain law and order during critical political events.
Adeoye assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to uncover the motive behind the attack and identify any individuals or groups that may have orchestrated the violence. He stressed that anyone found guilty will face prosecution under the law. The police spokesperson also urged residents and APC supporters to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist in the ongoing probe.
The incident has drawn attention to the need for enhanced security during political primaries in Lagos State, especially in areas prone to electoral violence. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to restore confidence in the electoral process and ensure that such disruptions do not recur. The arrest of the suspects and recovery of the firearm mark a significant step in holding perpetrators accountable and reinforcing public safety during political activities.
