The Osun State Police Command has arrested Babangida Muhammed, a suspect accused of attempting to kidnap an individual and demanding ₦13 million in ransom, following a coordinated operation on September 4, 2026. The arrest took place in the Telemu area along the Iwo-Ibadan Road, after police received a complaint from a man who had been receiving threatening phone calls from someone claiming to be Muhammed. According to the police, the caller threatened to abduct the complainant and his family unless the ransom was paid.
The investigation was launched immediately after the complaint was filed, with operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Team H, conducting intelligence gathering under the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zungura. Based on information gathered, police identified the suspect and planned a sting operation to apprehend him at the agreed meeting point. The complainant was instructed to bring the money to the location as part of the operation, while police remained hidden nearby to ensure a swift response.
At approximately 2:00 PM on September 4, the suspect arrived at the designated spot and collected the box containing the cash. As he attempted to flee into the bush, police operatives emerged from their covert positions and apprehended him without incident. The arrest was described as a result of professional, intelligence-led policing, showcasing the command’s commitment to tackling violent crimes in the state.
Muhammed is currently in custody, and authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if others were involved in the alleged offence. The Osun State Police Command confirmed that he will be charged in court once the investigation is concluded. In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, CP Zungura praised the VCRU team for their courage and efficiency during the operation.
