Osun Election: Governor Adeleke Forgives Those Who Offended Him

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has officially received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking the formal conclusion of the August 15 governorship election. The presentation took place at INEC’s state office in Osogbo on Wednesday, where Adeleke declared his forgiveness for all those who offended him during the campaign period. He stated, “All the people that offended me, I have forgiven them. The good Lord has fought my battle and I have overcome.” This gesture underscores his commitment to unity and peace as he assumes leadership.

Adeleke urged his fellow candidates to join hands with him in advancing the development of Osun State. He also made a solemn promise to provide scholarships for the children of individuals who lost their lives during the electoral process, demonstrating a focus on justice and compassion. The governor emphasized that he is the governor of all Osun people, regardless of political affiliation or past differences.

The Certificate of Return was issued following Adeleke’s victory in the gubernatorial election, which saw a voter turnout of 43.2 per cent. Osun INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, described the event as a solemn constitutional milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey. She highlighted that elections remain the most visible expression of democratic governance and praised the conduct of the recent polls as a successful democratic exercise involving all stakeholders.

Babalola commended security agencies for their coordination and efforts in ensuring a free and safe environment for voters. She also acknowledged the media’s crucial role in combating fake news, misinformation, and disinformation during the election. Traditional rulers and community leaders were recognized for their contributions to maintaining peace and encouraging civic participation. INEC staff were lauded for their professionalism and resilience throughout the electoral process.

“The presentation of the Certificate of Return means that democracy has come to stay in our country,” Babalola affirmed. She extended congratulations to Governor Adeleke and his deputy, urging them to serve the people diligently. Prof. Kunle Ajayi, INEC’s National Commissioner for the South-West, echoed these sentiments, calling the occasion a significant day for democracy in both Osun and Nigeria.

Ajayi noted that the people of Osun refused to surrender their democratic rights to fear and intimidation. He reiterated INEC’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and conclusive elections nationwide. He also called on political parties to invest more in training their agents on electoral procedures to enhance transparency and reduce disputes.

As Osun State transitions into a new chapter under Adeleke’s leadership, the focus remains on healing, unity, and progress. The peaceful transfer of power reinforces public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions and sets a precedent for future elections.
