OOU Final Year Student Killed in Robbery Attack

A final-year student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago-Iwoye, identified as Timi, was tragically shot dead during an armed robbery attack that swept through the Konigba area on Thursday. The incident, which left students and residents in shock, occurred when a group of armed robbers stormed several homes in the student-inhabited neighborhood, breaking doors and entering through roofs to loot valuables. Seven houses were reportedly targeted, including the home of the deceased, where the student was fatally shot. The attack lasted for several hours without any immediate intervention from security forces, raising serious concerns about safety in the area.

Witnesses described how the robbers forcefully entered homes, stealing phones, laptops, money, gas cylinders, and other personal belongings. The violent nature of the attack and the loss of a student’s life sparked widespread outrage among the university community. Students took to the streets in protest, marching to the palace of the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba Abdulrazaq Adenugba, the Ago Police Station, and the university campus. They carried placards with messages demanding safety and accountability, chanting slogans like “Ago-Iwoye is not safe, we need our safety” and “We are here to learn, not to be robbed.”

In response to the tragedy, the university management declared Thursday a lecture-free day. The Deputy Registrar and Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Niyi Oduwole, confirmed in an official statement that Vice-Chancellor Professor Ayodeji Agboola had directed the suspension of all academic activities to allow students to mourn their colleague. The institution extended its condolences to the bereaved family and pledged to work closely with security agencies to enhance surveillance and improve safety on campus and in surrounding communities. Students were urged to remain peaceful and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that an investigation is underway. DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the police spokesperson, stated that a manhunt has been launched for the perpetrators. He also commiserated with the family of the deceased, the university, and the broader student community. “The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the tragic death of an Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) student who was shot by suspected armed robbers in Ago-Iwoye,” Babaseyi said. “Police operatives responded promptly and are actively pursuing the suspects. We pray that the deceased’s soul rests in perfect peace.”

As the investigation continues, the incident has reignited calls for stronger security measures in educational institutions and vulnerable communities across Nigeria. The killing of Timi underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts between security agencies, universities, and local leaders to protect lives and restore public confidence.
