Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, ahead of the upcoming All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries. The announcement was made on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Agege, Lagos, where Obasa stated that party leaders in the area had encouraged him to run for the federal legislative position. His entry into the race is expected to intensify political activity in the constituency as aspirants ramp up consultations and grassroots mobilisation.
Obasa’s decision comes amid growing anticipation for the APC primaries, which will determine who represents Agege at the national level. During the meeting, he also expressed strong support for Ganiyu Egunjobi, the former Chairman of Agege Local Government Council, who is vying for the Agege Constituency I seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa urged party members and stakeholders to rally behind Egunjobi’s candidacy, highlighting his experience and commitment to the community.
In addition, the Speaker endorsed Azeez Oladapo Yusuf Ninolowo for the Agege Constituency II seat in the state assembly. This endorsement underscores Obasa’s strategic efforts to consolidate support within the APC in Agege and ensure a cohesive party front ahead of the primaries. His backing of both candidates reflects a broader push to strengthen the party’s presence in the area and secure key positions at both the state and federal levels.
As the political race heats up, supporters and party loyalists across Agege and Orile-Agege have intensified efforts to mobilise delegates and residents. Grassroots campaigns are gaining momentum, with candidates and their teams engaging in door-to-door canvassing and public rallies. The atmosphere in the constituency is charged with energy as aspirants vie for party tickets and public support.
Meanwhile, APC members in Agege, Orile-Agege, and other parts of Lagos State are awaiting the outcome of the ongoing screening exercise being conducted by the party’s state and national leadership. This screening is a critical step before the primaries, ensuring that only qualified and loyal candidates proceed to the next stage. The results will shape the final list of aspirants who will compete for the party’s nomination.
Obasa’s move to contest the federal seat marks a significant shift in his political trajectory, moving from state to national politics. His experience as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly positions him as a strong contender in the Agege Federal Constituency race. As the APC primaries draw nearer, the political landscape in Agege is set for a dynamic and competitive season, with implications for both local and national governance. The outcome will likely influence the direction of party politics in Lagos and beyond.
