The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has launched targeted passport intervention exercises in the United States, Canada, Qatar, and the United Kingdom to improve service delivery for Nigerians abroad. These initiatives, carried out under the directive of Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, aim to bring passport services closer to diaspora citizens and reduce delays in application processing. The exercises are being conducted in collaboration with Nigerian diplomatic missions and community representatives to ensure a coordinated and efficient approach.
According to Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS Public Relations Officer, thousands of Nigerians have already benefited from these outreach programs. In the United States, 535 applicants were enrolled across Chicago, Michigan, and Milwaukee between September 7 and 15. Meanwhile, Canada saw significant participation, with 2,257 individuals registered in Manitoba, Toronto, Saskatoon, Alberta, and New Brunswick from September 6 to 19. In Qatar, 751 persons were successfully enrolled between August 9 and 24, demonstrating strong engagement in the Gulf region.
The ongoing exercise in the United Kingdom, covering London and Manchester, has recorded the highest number of enrolments so far, with 5,099 applicants processed as of September 21. Notably, passport production and dispatch are being carried out simultaneously in the UK to expedite delivery timelines. This concurrent process ensures that applicants receive their documents promptly without prolonged waiting periods.
For those unable to secure appointment slots during the physical exercises or who prefer not to visit centres, the NIS encourages the use of the Contactless Passport Application System. This digital platform offers an alternative route for Nigerians to apply for passports remotely, enhancing accessibility and convenience. The service remains committed to providing responsive, timely, and efficient passport services to all Nigerians, regardless of location.
The interventions reflect the NIS’s broader goal of modernizing immigration processes and improving customer experience. By expanding access through strategic locations and leveraging technology, the service is addressing long-standing challenges faced by Nigerians abroad. These efforts are expected to continue in other countries, further strengthening Nigeria’s commitment to its diaspora.
