The Nigeria Football Federation has shifted its focus to Newcastle United forward William Osula after failing to secure the international allegiance of three other Danish-Nigerian players. Patrick Dorgu, Philip Billing, and Isabella Obaze are no longer eligible to represent Nigeria due to having played in cap-tying matches for Denmark. The NFF is now pursuing Osula, who remains eligible for Nigeria despite being provisionally tied to Denmark at the youth level.
According to Danish sports magazine Tipsbladet, the Nigerian Football Federation has reached out to Osula through his agent to explore the possibility of a switch. The move comes as part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to strengthen its national team by recruiting talented players of Nigerian descent who have not yet committed internationally. Osula, who has not featured in any competitive match for Denmark’s senior national team, is seen as a viable option.
Since June 2023, Osula has been provisionally cap-tied to Denmark after coming off the bench in a European U21 Championship qualifier against Lithuania. However, he has not been called up to the senior squad and was an unused substitute in several 2026 World Cup qualifiers, including matches against Scotland, Greece, North Macedonia, and Czech Republic. This lack of senior international experience leaves the door open for Nigeria to make a formal bid.
The 22-year-old forward has been in impressive form for Newcastle United, scoring three goals in his last four Premier League appearances, including the decisive goal in a win over Manchester United. His performances have drawn attention across Europe, highlighting his potential as a key player for Nigeria’s future. Osula, a product of Sheffield United’s academy, has also scored eight goals in 15 appearances for Denmark’s U21 team, showcasing his consistency at the youth level.
