A 20-year-old man, Lawisi Safiyanu, has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command for allegedly stabbing and killing 25-year-old Muhammad Abba over a N500 debt dispute in Dutse Local Government Area. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30am on October 1, 2026, in Chamo village, where the two men had a heated argument following the purchase of a mobile phone. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the deceased had bought the phone for N1,500 but only paid N1,000 at the time, leaving an unpaid balance of N500.
The disagreement escalated quickly, leading to violence. During the confrontation, Safiyanu allegedly used a knife to stab Abba, causing fatal injuries. The victim was immediately rushed to Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital in Dutse for emergency treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical care. Authorities confirmed that the suspect was apprehended shortly after the attack, and the weapon used—the knife—was recovered as evidence.
SP Adam stated that preliminary investigations have been completed, and the suspect is now facing charges in court. He emphasized that the police are committed to ensuring justice is served and that all necessary legal procedures are followed. The arrest comes amid growing concerns over petty disputes turning violent in rural communities across northern Nigeria.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of unresolved financial disagreements, especially when emotions run high. It also underscores the need for better conflict resolution mechanisms and public awareness on managing disputes peacefully. The police have urged residents to report any suspicious activities and to avoid engaging in altercations that could lead to loss of life.
The case has drawn attention from local leaders and community members, who are calling for stricter enforcement of laws against violent crimes. As the legal process moves forward, the family of Muhammad Abba seeks justice and closure. This incident serves as a stark reminder of how small conflicts can escalate into deadly outcomes if not handled with care and restraint.
