The Labour Party (LP) has been officially included in the list of candidates for the Enugu North senatorial by-election, following a correction by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The by-election, scheduled for June 20, 2026, will determine the next senator for the Enugu North Senatorial District. Initially, the Labour Party and its candidate were omitted from INEC’s first release of authorized parties and candidates for the nationwide by-elections, despite the party having fulfilled all constitutional and statutory requirements.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluna Asogwa, the Labour Party expressed concern over the initial exclusion, which occurred despite their full compliance with electoral procedures. The party noted that after engaging with INEC leadership, the oversight was promptly addressed, and the Labour Party was reinstated in the official list of participants. This correction ensures that the party can now proceed with its campaign preparations without legal or administrative barriers.
The Labour Party emphasized its readiness to contest the by-election and deliver credible, people-focused representation for the remainder of the 10th Senate. The party commended INEC for its responsiveness, stating that the timely correction has reinforced public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process. Asogwa highlighted that the party’s supporters, members, and well-wishers had shown great concern and vigilance, and their continued support is deeply appreciated.
The Labour Party also extended goodwill to its candidates in other by-elections, including those in Nasarawa North and Rivers South-East. The party remains committed to promoting democratic values and ensuring fair electoral outcomes across Nigeria. It expressed hope that the results of these elections will not only benefit the Labour Party but also strengthen Nigeria’s democratic culture and deepen public trust in the electoral system.
With the inclusion now confirmed, the Labour Party is moving forward with its campaign strategies, aiming to connect with voters in Enugu North and beyond. The party’s presence in the race adds another competitive voice to the political landscape ahead of the 2026 by-elections, underscoring the importance of inclusive and transparent electoral processes in Nigeria’s democracy.
