Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has publicly accused former Anambra State governor Peter Obi of betrayal, just one day after being appointed as the spokesman for ADC’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The Nollywood veteran-turned-politician made the revelation during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, highlighting a significant shift in his political allegiance. Okonkwo’s comments come amid growing speculation about alliances and rivalries within Nigeria’s 2023 presidential race, as parties and candidates position themselves for the upcoming elections.
Okonkwo stated that he had already severed ties with Obi in July 2024, after concluding that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate lacked the decisiveness necessary to lead the nation. As a public affairs analyst since 2009, Okonkwo emphasized that he had fulfilled his role in supporting Obi’s campaign before stepping away. He noted that he had been among the earliest interviewers to cover his decision to disassociate from Obi, making it clear to the public that he was no longer speaking on his behalf.
“In July 2024, I made it public that I was no longer speaking for Peter Obi because he’s not decisive,” Okonkwo said. He further explained that he had observed qualities in Obi that, in his view, rendered him unfit to be President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “I’ve seen in him certain qualities that make him unfit to be the President,” he added, stressing that he had completed his work with Obi and moved on to pursue his own political path.
Despite his departure from Obi’s camp, Okonkwo claimed that it was Obi who betrayed him, not the other way around. This assertion has sparked reactions across political circles, especially given Okonkwo’s recent appointment as Atiku Abubakar’s spokesman. The move signals a strategic realignment within the ADC, as the party seeks to strengthen its public messaging ahead of the election.
Okonkwo’s shift from supporting Obi to joining Atiku’s campaign underscores the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political landscape. His experience in media and public affairs adds a new dimension to Atiku’s campaign team, potentially enhancing its outreach and credibility. As the 2023 presidential race intensifies, figures like Okonkwo are expected to play key roles in shaping public perception and mobilizing voter support.
The political dynamics between major candidates continue to evolve, with endorsements and defections becoming increasingly common. Okonkwo’s public statement not only reflects personal disillusionment but also highlights broader concerns about leadership qualities among presidential aspirants. His decision to align with Atiku Abubakar may influence voter sentiment, particularly among those who value decisiveness and experience in governance. As the election draws closer, such developments will remain closely watched by political analysts and the general public alike.
