Kebbi Police Launch Manhunt for Husband After Wife Dies in Gun Incident

A tragic incident in Kebbi State has prompted a full-scale investigation and manhunt by the Kebbi State Police Command after a 25-year-old woman, Sa’ima Sani, died from gunshot wounds in Geza Village, Bagudo Local Government Area. The incident occurred on June 9, when Sa’ima was fatally injured while carrying a locally made Dane gun for her husband, Auwalu Hassan, who had asked her to retrieve it from a room in their home. The gun discharged accidentally, striking her in the stomach and left hand, leading to her death despite medical intervention at the General Hospital in Bagudo.

According to police sources, the shooting was reported immediately, and officers from the Bagudo Divisional Police Headquarters responded swiftly. They evacuated Sa’ima to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead while receiving treatment. The police conducted a thorough processing of the scene, including photographing the body, before releasing it to her family for burial. The husband, Auwalu Hassan, is currently at large, having reportedly fled the area after the incident, and authorities are actively pursuing his arrest.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama shared details of the case on his X handle, highlighting the growing concerns around firearm safety in rural communities. The police command has emphasized that investigations are ongoing to determine whether criminal negligence or other factors contributed to the fatal accident. They are also examining how the firearm was stored and whether proper safety protocols were followed in the household.

This incident underscores the dangers of improper firearm handling, especially in areas where locally made weapons are commonly used. The police have issued a public warning urging citizens to store firearms securely and to avoid allowing unauthorized individuals, including family members, to handle loaded weapons. They stressed that such tragedies are preventable with greater awareness and responsibility.

The Kebbi State Police Command remains committed to ensuring justice for Sa’ima Sani and her family. As the manhunt for her husband continues, authorities are also working to educate communities on firearm safety to prevent similar incidents in the future. This case serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with unregulated weapons and the need for stricter safety measures across the country.
