Several people are feared dead following a brutal attack by suspected armed herders on Sai Community in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday. The violent assault, which involved indiscriminate gunfire and the burning of homes, has left many residents injured and forced hundreds to flee their homes in panic. Security sources confirmed that the attackers stormed the community in large numbers, launching a coordinated assault that caused widespread destruction and fear among villagers.
Eyewitnesses and local leaders reported that the gunmen opened fire without warning, targeting both homes and individuals as they moved through the community. Zagazola Makama, a community elder, described the scene as chaotic, with houses set ablaze and residents scrambling for safety. Many villagers, including women and children, were forced to run into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire, leaving behind their belongings and livestock.
The attack triggered immediate responses from security agencies. Troops and other security personnel were deployed to the area shortly after distress calls were received. They launched operations to repel the attackers, secure the community, and prevent the violence from spreading to neighboring villages. The security forces also initiated search and rescue missions to locate missing residents and ensure no further casualties occurred.
Injured victims were evacuated to nearby hospitals for emergency medical treatment, while families displaced by the violence are now seeking shelter in safer areas. The destruction of homes and property has left many without basic necessities, deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region. The Nigerian Army, in coordination with other security agencies, has since intensified patrols in Sai and surrounding communities to deter further attacks and restore public confidence.
This incident adds to the growing insecurity in Benue State, where clashes between herders and farmers have become increasingly violent in recent years. Despite ongoing efforts by security forces and government authorities to address the root causes, attacks continue to disrupt lives and displace communities. The government has been urged to take stronger measures to protect vulnerable populations and ensure justice for victims.
As investigations continue, residents remain on high alert, hoping for lasting peace and stability in their region. The attack on Sai serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms and conflict resolution strategies in Nigeria’s volatile Middle Belt.
