Gunmen Attack Plateau Community, Kill Pregnant Woman and Another Victim

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani bandits attacked the Dyan community in Rim Village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Friday night, killing a 32-year-old pregnant woman, Mrs Happiness Pam, and a 24-year-old man, Daniel Luka. The assailants stormed the village around 10 p.m., opening fire indiscriminately and leaving residents in shock and mourning. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for urgent security intervention in the region.

Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the attack in a statement issued on Saturday. He described the violence as gruesome and unacceptable, emphasizing the tragic loss of two innocent lives. Tengwong expressed deep sorrow over the death of the pregnant woman, who was carrying the hope of her family, and the young man, whose future was cut short by senseless brutality.

The BYM spokesman noted that the association received news of the attack with shock and sadness, highlighting that such violent incidents have become distressingly common in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State. “These killings represent not only an attack on individuals but also an assault on the collective peace, security, and humanity of our people,” Tengwong said. He stressed that the violence is not just a local issue but a threat to the broader social fabric of the state.

In a show of solidarity, BYM extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire Dyan community. The association called on security agencies to intensify their operations to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face justice. Tengwong urged both the Federal Government and the Plateau State government to take proactive steps to protect vulnerable rural communities, warning that the ongoing violence is becoming unbearable for the people.

BYM also advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid late-night travel through high-risk areas. The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting lawful efforts aimed at restoring peace and security across Plateau State. Despite the gravity of the incident, the Plateau State Police Command had not released an official statement at the time of reporting.

The attack underscores the persistent insecurity plaguing parts of Plateau State, where communities continue to live under the shadow of armed violence. As the government and security forces face mounting pressure to act, the people of Dyan and surrounding areas await justice and protection. The tragedy in Rim Village serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustained, coordinated action to end the cycle of violence in Nigeria’s troubled communities.
