Gov Sule Asserts Right to Endorse Successor Amid Political Speculation

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has affirmed his constitutional and democratic right to endorse a candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election, while also announcing that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state will adopt direct primaries to select its candidate. Speaking during a statewide broadcast in Lafia on Friday, Sule emphasized that his support for a particular aspirant is based on the individual’s capacity, experience, and vision to continue the development momentum achieved in the state. He stressed that his endorsement does not disqualify other aspirants from participating in the primary process, which will be open and fair for all.

The governor explained that the decision to hold direct primaries was made after consultations with key party stakeholders, aimed at ensuring transparency and inclusivity in the selection process. “As Governor of Nasarawa State and leader of our great party in the state, I have exercised my constitutional and democratic right to support and endorse an aspirant whom I believe possesses the capacity, experience and vision to consolidate on the gains we have collectively made,” Sule stated. He reiterated that the primary will provide every aspirant with a fair chance to compete, reinforcing the party’s commitment to credible and peaceful internal elections.

Sule also called on APC members, supporters of other political parties, youths, and community leaders to remain calm and peaceful as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. He warned against hate speech, intimidation, and the spread of false information, urging all stakeholders to prioritize the peace, unity, and progress of Nasarawa State. “No ambition is greater than the peace, unity and progress of our dear State,” he said, adding that regardless of electoral outcomes, all residents remain part of one big family united by a common destiny and love for the state.

The governor further urged security agencies to remain professional and neutral throughout the electoral process, ensuring that elections are conducted without interference or bias. He also appealed to young people not to be manipulated into acts of violence, stressing that their energy should be channeled into constructive civic engagement. Sule noted that political consultations and campaigns have already begun across various political groups, signaling the start of a competitive but orderly electoral season.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Nasarawa State is preparing for a transparent and peaceful political transition, guided by leadership that values democracy, inclusivity, and national cohesion. The governor’s statements underscore a commitment to maintaining stability while ensuring that every voice is heard in the democratic process.
