At least five worshippers abducted during a violent attack on ECWA Church in Omugo, Kwara State, are confirmed to have died in captivity, according to security sources. The tragic incident occurred on March 22, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen stormed the church in the Oro Ago District of Ifelodun Local Government Area during a service. The attackers opened fire, causing chaos and panic among congregants before dragging about eight worshippers into the nearby forest. Zubair Olaitan, Coordinator of the Kwara South Joint Security, confirmed the deaths to DAILY POST on Wednesday, citing reports from within the terrorists’ camp.
Among those reportedly killed is Rachel Oluwaremilekun Omole, the wife of the church pastor. Sources indicated that five abductees lost their lives, though the exact circumstances of their deaths remain unclear. Information about the killings came from one of the victims who managed to escape from the kidnappers’ hideout. This survivor provided details that were relayed to the families of the deceased, plunging them into deep mourning. The families have been informed of the grim news, and the emotional toll on the community is evident.
The attackers reportedly contacted the families through the father of one of the abducted worshippers, demanding a ₦1 billion ransom for the release of the captives. However, negotiations later led to a reduction in the demanded amount. Despite efforts by relatives to secure their release — including the delivery of ₦20 million, food, and hot drinks as requested by the kidnappers — the captives were not freed. Security agencies had launched joint rescue operations to locate the victims and apprehend the perpetrators, but the mission has yet to yield results.
Official confirmation from government authorities regarding the deaths was not available at the time of reporting. The incident has raised alarm over rising insecurity in Kwara State, particularly in rural areas where religious gatherings are often targeted. The attack on ECWA Church underscores the vulnerability of communities and places pressure on security forces to intensify operations against armed gangs. As investigations continue, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice and peace to return to Omugo and surrounding areas.
