A 12-year-old girl, Miss Sopuruchi Ibe, has tragically lost her life after drowning in floodwaters in Ebem Ohafia, Abia State. The incident occurred on Friday evening following a heavy downpour that swept the young student away along Eni Njoku Road. Her body was recovered the next morning, sparking widespread grief and mourning across the community. Sopuruchi, a Junior Secondary School 2 student at Federal Government College, Ohafia, was reportedly swept away while navigating the flooded area.
The flooding began around 6:00 p.m. as intense rainfall caused water levels to rise rapidly in the Ndia Chukpai Compound, where Sopuruchi lived. Despite immediate efforts by community members to search for her, she could not be found until Saturday morning. When her body was discovered, it marked a devastating end to a frantic rescue mission that had gripped the neighborhood overnight.
Ifeanyi Okali, Publicity Secretary of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), confirmed the tragedy and expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “Sadly, 12-year-old Sopuruchi Ume Ibe, who was swept away by floodwaters following a heavy downpour in Ebem Ohafia yesterday evening, has been found this morning, but unfortunately, she did not survive,” he stated. He extended heartfelt condolences to her parents, family, friends, classmates, and the entire community during this painful time.
This heartbreaking incident adds to a growing list of flooding-related deaths in Abia State. Just recently, a 37-year-old trader identified as Mr. Ejiuwa died in a similar flooding incident in Ugwueke community, Bende Local Government Area, while returning from the market.
