Ekiti State is poised for a peaceful and high-turnout governorship election on Saturday, according to Yinka Oyebode, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Biodun Oyebanji. Oyebode expressed confidence in the electoral process during a meeting with media executives in Ado Ekiti on Friday, highlighting the open and inclusive political environment created by the state government. He emphasized that the governor has ensured all political parties, including the opposition, have been given equal access to campaign freely across the state.
Oyebode attributed past election-related violence in Ekiti to the suppression of opposition activities by previous governments, which created a hostile atmosphere. He noted that such conditions often led to reactionary responses from opposition groups, escalating tensions. However, under Governor Oyebanji’s leadership, the state has adopted a different approach, treating all citizens as one unified entity regardless of political, religious, or cultural backgrounds. This policy, he said, has fostered a more harmonious and secure environment for the election.
The media aide pointed to the high voter participation already seen in the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as evidence of public enthusiasm. He revealed that approximately 91 per cent of eligible voters have collected their PVCs, a significant improvement over previous elections. This surge in voter engagement, according to Oyebode, reflects a growing trust in the electoral process and a desire among Ekiti residents to participate actively in democracy.
He also noted that there have been no credible reports of opposition parties being restricted in their campaign activities, a stark contrast to past elections. This openness, he said, is a strong indicator that Saturday’s election will be peaceful and free from violence. Oyebode praised the state’s security agencies for their preparedness and cooperation with political stakeholders, further reinforcing confidence in a smooth electoral process.
Ekiti has consistently been regarded as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, and Oyebode believes this trend will continue. He urged citizens to exercise their right to vote responsibly and to support the peaceful conduct of the election. The governor’s office remains committed to ensuring transparency, fairness, and security throughout the electoral process.
As the nation watches closely, Ekiti’s election could set a benchmark for other states seeking to conduct free and fair polls. The peaceful atmosphere and high voter turnout expected on Saturday may signal a new chapter in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
