Ebonyi NUJ Urges Issue-Based Campaigns Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has urged politicians and political actors to adopt issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, cautioning against inflammatory rhetoric, character assassination, and divisive politics that threaten national unity and democratic progress. The call was made during the union’s recent congress held on Friday at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre in Abakaliki, under the leadership of State Council Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor. The gathering emphasized the need for political campaigns rooted in policies, programmes, and ideas that foster peace, stability, and democratic development in Ebonyi State.

The NUJ stressed that electoral guidelines must be strictly followed by all political actors to ensure a fair and credible electoral process. The union believes that focusing on substantive issues rather than personal attacks will enhance public trust in the political system and encourage greater civic participation. Journalists in the state reaffirmed their commitment to responsible journalism, ethical reporting, and promoting peace during electioneering periods.

On agricultural matters, the NUJ expressed deep concern over the persistent delays in the distribution of government-provided farm inputs to farmers. The union urged the state government to expedite the delivery of these essential resources to genuine farmers to boost food production and strengthen food security in the state. Timely access to inputs, the NUJ argued, is critical to improving agricultural output and reducing reliance on imported food items.

In response to the annual threat of flooding, the congress advised residents of flood-prone areas to strictly follow safety guidelines issued by relevant authorities. The union warned against blocking drainage channels, emphasizing that such actions significantly increase the risk of flooding during the peak rainy season. The NUJ encouraged communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency response teams to minimize damage and loss of life.

The union also made a formal appeal to Governor Francis Nwifuru to allocate an alternative parcel of land for its proposed journalists’ housing estate project. The original land allocation at the EBSU Pocket Layout was recently revoked, leaving the project in limbo. The NUJ stressed that the housing estate is vital for improving the living conditions of journalists and ensuring their welfare and security in the state.

The congress concluded with a reaffirmation of the union’s dedication to promoting peace, responsible journalism, and sustainable development in Ebonyi State. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, the NUJ’s call for issue-based politics and civic responsibility underscores the growing need for ethical leadership and public accountability in the country’s democratic journey.
