Dr Mutiu Agboke, the outgoing Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State, has urged INEC staff to uphold the will of the electorate in all electoral processes, emphasizing that votes must count and democratic integrity must be preserved. His remarks were made during a handover ceremony held in Osogbo on Tuesday, as he prepares for a redeployment to Ondo State. Agboke stressed that any attempt to manipulate election outcomes outside the voters’ mandate would erode public trust and deepen political apathy in Nigeria.
In his farewell address, Agboke warned INEC officials against succumbing to undue influence or engaging in electoral malpractice. He reminded them that the commission is constitutionally mandated to deliver credible elections and must always reassure voters that their votes matter. “Always assure the voters that their votes would definitely count because INEC as a body is created by law to make votes count at all times,” he said. He cautioned that any process that determines winners without reflecting the electorate’s choice is not only undemocratic but also harmful to Nigeria’s political ecosystem.
Agboke also emphasized the importance of professional ethics, urging staff to resist corruption and maintain their integrity. He warned that those who compromise their values will eventually be discarded. “I leave you all to uphold the ethics of your profession. Do not be susceptible in any manner. Remember, if you are used, eventually you would be dumped,” he stated. He reiterated his lifelong commitment to due process and fair elections, saying that even if he were to die and return, he would follow the same principles.
Reflecting on his tenure, which began in November 2022, Agboke acknowledged differing perceptions about his leadership style, whether seen as too tough or too soft. He maintained that all his actions were aimed at fostering a culture of accountability and professionalism within INEC Osun. “Whatever perception you have, it was all in the name of instilling the spirit to do the right thing,” he said. He expressed gratitude to staff and stakeholders for their support and called for continued collaboration to sustain electoral credibility.
Mrs Victoria Temitayo Adelusi, the Osun INEC Administrative Secretary, praised Agboke as a transformative administrator. She highlighted his exceptional performance during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, noting that Osun State has consistently ranked third nationally in CVR participation due to his leadership. “INEC Osun State will miss your presence and also take pride in knowing your legacy in the state will be ensured,” she said, commending his dedication and sacrifice.
As Dr Agboke transitions to his new role in Ondo State, his legacy in Osun remains one of integrity, professionalism, and a relentless pursuit of credible elections. His departure marks the end of a chapter, but his influence on electoral standards in the state is expected to endure.
