Delta Police Officer Shoots Unarmed Man Dead in Viral Live Video, Sparking Nationwide Outrage

A disturbing video showing what appears to be an extrajudicial killing by police officers in Effurun, Delta State, has triggered nationwide outrage and calls for justice. The footage, which went viral on Monday, allegedly captures armed officers from the Effurun Area Command of the Delta State Police Command executing a man in broad daylight. The victim, whose hands were tied behind his back, pleaded repeatedly for mercy, saying, “I don’t know anything, officer. I beg, I go tell you everything. Na my friend deceive me, I no know anything concern. Carry me go Sapele, I go carry you go meet am, please,” before being shot. The graphic nature of the clip has sparked widespread condemnation across social media platforms.

The incident, which occurred in public, has raised serious questions about police conduct, accountability, and the rule of law in Nigeria. Many Nigerians are demanding answers about the identity of the officers involved and the circumstances leading to the shooting. The video has reignited long-standing debates over the abuse of power by security agencies and the urgent need for systemic reform. Critics argue that such actions undermine public trust and highlight a pattern of impunity within the police force.

Actor Stanley Ontop took to Instagram to directly confront the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Edafe Bright, and the Nigeria Police Force. He accused the police of turning Delta State into a “police abattoir” and called for swift justice. Ontop urged authorities to bring the officers involved to trial, demanding they be handed over alive for public accountability. He also threatened mass protests, stating, “We shall block all the roads in Asaba and Effurun until justice is served.”

Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu also condemned the incident, describing it as a “live execution” carried out by men allegedly affiliated with the Effurun Area Command. He emphasized that the victim was not resisting, was begging for mercy, and was stripped of any chance to defend himself. Gwamnishu accused the police of covering up a crime and urged the Federal Government to launch an immediate investigation. He called on the public to share the video widely and tag the Nigeria Police Force to ensure transparency.

As the video continues to circulate online, pressure is mounting on authorities to act. The incident has drawn national attention and could influence public discourse on police reform and human rights in Nigeria. The demand for justice remains strong, and the outcome of any investigation will be closely watched by citizens and civil society groups alike.
