A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Gombe has ordered the continued detention of two African Democratic Congress (ADC) supporters, Muhammad-Sunusi Abdullahi (also known as Ataka) and Ahmed-Daudu Dinawa (also known as Jadda), over their alleged role in a violent disruption at Gombe International Airport during the arrival of the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Bala Bello Tinka. The incident, which occurred around noon on July 15, 2026, led to a court appearance on Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Aliyu Abubakar, where both men pleaded not guilty to seven charges including criminal trespass, disobedience to lawful orders, obstruction of public officials, intentional insult, inciting disturbance, and causing damage.
The police prosecutor, Umehi Thomas, told the court that the defendants, along with others still at large, forcefully invaded the airport’s VIP section, destroyed the security lock at the Executive Gate, and gained unauthorised access to restricted areas. He stated that security personnel and airport management failed to stop the group, who turned violent and insulted officials during the incident. Thomas emphasized that the full extent of property damage would be determined during the ongoing investigation and urged the court to remand the suspects in custody to ensure the integrity of the probe.
In response, defence lawyer Ayuba Rabiu argued for bail, citing Section 177 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Gombe State, 2020, and Sections 34, 35, and 36 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee the right to bail under certain conditions. He also pointed out that his clients had already spent five days in police custody since July 16, 2026, and that their continued detention without bail was unjustified. The court, after hearing both sides, adjourned the case to August 5, 2026, for further hearing and scheduled July 23, 2026, to rule on the bail application.
The case has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of the ADC candidate and the disruption at a key public infrastructure. The alleged actions have raised concerns about political violence and the need for security during electoral campaigns. As the investigation continues, the court’s decision on bail will be closely watched by legal experts and political observers alike. The outcome may set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections in Gombe State.
