Chelle Keeps Cards Close Ahead of Unity Cup Squad Announcement: Ive Already Made My Choice

The 2026 Unity Cup at The Valley in London is set to be a crucial platform for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle to evaluate emerging talents and expand his player pool ahead of key international fixtures. The tournament, scheduled for June, will serve as a strategic stepping stone for Nigeria’s national team as it prepares for high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal later in the year. Chelle has confirmed that the event will allow him to test new players and reinforce his vision of building a competitive squad capable of achieving global success.

Nigerian football fans are eagerly anticipating the squad announcement, with several young stars expected to feature. Among them are Plymouth Argyle forward Owen Oseni, Pisa striker Rafiu Durosinmi, Hamburg winger Philip Otele, Dukla Prague midfielder Samson Tijani, and Ikorodu City captain Tosin Oyedokun. These players represent a mix of domestic and overseas-based talents who have shown promise in their respective leagues. Chelle emphasized that while Nigeria has a wealth of young talent, not all can be included at once, and selection will be based on fit with the team’s philosophy and long-term goals.

In an interview with TVC News, Chelle stated, “Definitely, Nigeria is blessed with a lot of talent, but not all will play at the same time, so I try my best to give opportunities to those who can fit into our philosophy and vision, which is to become the best.” He added that the Unity Cup will be instrumental in identifying players who can contribute to the Super Eagles’ future success. The coach also acknowledged the challenges of player availability for the upcoming friendlies against Poland and Portugal, noting that many players are currently on holiday after a long season.

“At this time, this is difficult because for these games against Poland and Portugal, players are on holiday. They have spent a year playing, some have minor injuries, and they need to rest, so it will depend on how they feel,” Chelle explained. He stressed that his focus remains on the Unity Cup, giving him time to assess players and prepare strategically for June’s matches. Chelle was recently spotted attending Nigeria Premier Football League matches, where he closely observed domestic stars and expressed admiration for their performances.

“There are some good talents in the league. I watched some of them because I follow them, and I wanted to see them in real situations. I have already made my choice, so we will see in a few days,” he said. Despite speculation linking him to coaching positions in Africa and France following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Chelle remains committed to his role with the Super Eagles. “When I took the job, my goal was to win. You can ask the Nigeria Football Federation, but definitely, if you are the coach of the Super Eagles, you need to win, so there is a lot of pressure, but I’m ready to do my job and try to give the best for this country.”

As the Unity Cup draws near, Nigerian football supporters are hopeful that Chelle’s selections will mark the beginning of a new era for the Super Eagles, one built on youth, potential, and a clear path to victory.
